Amirah's Reflection 1

Sunday, March 20, 2011 ♥ 9:42 PM

The whole experience yesterday was AWESOME!! I am so proud of the YEP team! Everything turned out GREAT. Observing how the team interacted and ensure that each of the clients enjoyed themselves was really heart- warming. To be honest, I never expect things to turn out that way. GOOD JOB PEOPLE!! Hope you will do the same in Cambodia!

Although this not the first I interacted with people with disability, yesterday experience was very different. One possible reason why I felt that way was because I am more comfortable to interact and chat with them. They are friendly and willing to share their stories with us. They are not as 'cold' as I thought. After meeting with the clients I feel like setting up a befriending group from YEP team so that we still can keep in touch with the clients. I think people in the society have certain prejudice and discrimination against this group of people because they do not have much exposure or interacted with them before. People in the society always have wrong idea and feeling towards people with disability. They always feel sympathy towards this group of people. I don’t think it is the ‘right’ emotion the society should feel towards them as in my opinion they do need people’s sympathy but empathy. I think nobody in the world likes to be sympathised. There are still many areas that the society can work on to change the perceptions towards this group of people. One area that the society can work on is to improve on the facilities in the school to cater to the needs of people with disability. This is because with education I believe that this kids can be employed and have stable income rather than the stigma that they will be employed in the low paying industry.

So Cassie can I shower first since I posted a blog post already? HAHAHA :D

About Cambodia YEP 2011

Our YEP trip is from 21st March to 3rd April 2011. Our group which consists of 24 members, will be heading to Khmer Village (Cambodia) and Phnom Penh. We plan to bring joy and memories to the villagers; especially people with disabilities. Moreover, geared with our skills and a passion to reach out to communities beyond Singapore, we hope that both our students and the villagers will gain something precious from this trip.
