Personally, I feel that a disability is just like a characteristic. Each and every one of us possess a unique set of characteristics, and yet we are all the same as human beings. Therefore, in my opinion, having a disability does not make a person in any way different from others who do not have a disability.

Also, I think that inclusion is a habit that everyone should practice. It should be recognised that people with disabilities should not be treated differently but yet be rendered help when necessary. In addition, instead of simply showing pity for them, we should learn to empathise with these people and seek to understand their needs and not just look at things from the surface.

The training provided has helped to prepare me greatly by equipping me with more knowledge that are of relevance to disabilities. Firstly, the information provided about the several common disabilities such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy was sufficient and allowed me to better differentiate between them. Next, the lesson on the proper usage of assistive devices and methods of handling people with disabilities was also very helpful. This knowledge gained has already aided my interaction with the clients from AWWA during the pre-yep activity and it can definitely be put to use in Cambodia when we visit the schools and homes and even in the future.

It was an interesting and enriching experience working with the clients. Seeing their active participation in the activities, especially the one where groups were tasked to form the longest line, was a shocking and valuable lesson for me. Despite their disabilities, these people do not despair and dwell on it, but instead choose to adopt a positive mindset where they focus on what they have but not what they have lost. These characteristics of being optimistic and determined is something that even people without disabilities may not have, and for quite a few times, it made me felt guilty about myself and prompted me to reflect on my own attitude in life.

As one of the leader of my group, I think I was not active enough. Although I did make some effort to participate and interact with the clients of my group, there were however times when I was rather apprehensive and hesitant in approaching them. This was made more challenging as the clients in my group tend to be quieter and less sociable. When presented with more opportunities during our trip in Cambodia, I will certainly take on a proactive role and engage myself more :)

About Cambodia YEP 2011

Our YEP trip is from 21st March to 3rd April 2011. Our group which consists of 24 members, will be heading to Khmer Village (Cambodia) and Phnom Penh. We plan to bring joy and memories to the villagers; especially people with disabilities. Moreover, geared with our skills and a passion to reach out to communities beyond Singapore, we hope that both our students and the villagers will gain something precious from this trip.
