Wan Yi's reflections

Friday, March 18, 2011 ♥ 10:17 PM

I wasn't really aware of the differences between inclusion and integration before I attended the YEP briefing. I am glad that we are making a difference in the Cambodians' lives by introducing this new concept of inclusion to them. Although we cannot really do much a difference in the whole nation, I really hope we can make a significant difference in the Rabbit and Mainstream school that we are going to.

I feel that our society has a certain stereotype towards PwD - they may feel uncomfortable around them because they will not know how to interact with PwDs appropriately. They may also underestimate PwD's abilities. For example, many may not know that children with autism may not be doing well in school, but may be gifted in artistic talents. I feel that these prejudice may be floating around because of social influences such as television shows showcasing PwDs as weaker ones.

During the pre-yep activity, I was provided with a platform to interact and understand PwD better. It was a pleasant experience because everyone were friendly to one another, and new friendships were formed. This experience sparked an interest in me to interact with PwD more. It also helped me to look forward to the actual YEP trip. I can't wait to make a difference in the cambodians' lives! :D

About Cambodia YEP 2011

Our YEP trip is from 21st March to 3rd April 2011. Our group which consists of 24 members, will be heading to Khmer Village (Cambodia) and Phnom Penh. We plan to bring joy and memories to the villagers; especially people with disabilities. Moreover, geared with our skills and a passion to reach out to communities beyond Singapore, we hope that both our students and the villagers will gain something precious from this trip.
